-solved the sound by installing kmix (not on default installation?!?)
-solved the display settings by running "gnome-power-manager" in konsole
-solved the too-many icons by "rm ~/Desktop/*.*~"

Still don't like how KDE handles settings. Do I really need 3 settings menuitems for each program, none of which do what I expect?</description>
